SIUH / 1199 Negotiation Update – 10/14/2019

As National PA Week comes to an end, we would like to thank you for all that you do to provide world-class care to Staten Island University Hospital (SIUH) patients. While we have some difficultissues to work through at the bargaining table, we are proud of the hard work, compassion and professionalism that you display on SIUH’s behalf.

We continued to make steady progress on several non-economic proposals during Thursday’s negotiation session with 1199SEIU United Healthcare Workers East (1199). The union made clear its desireto advance the discussions to include economic issues, and we too are looking forward to moving the dialog forward. It is not unusual – and it is more consistent with common practice – for economic issues to be managed after the non-economic issues are resolved. With each negotiating session, we are moving closer to our ability to discuss economic issues, such as healthcare, retirement and salary.

The negotiations process can sometimes take longer than either party would like, which is especially true with bargaining first contracts like this one. As we stated at the onset of negotiations,we are fully committed to negotiating in good faith toward a fair and fiscally-responsible contract that balances the needs of both parties, reflects the unique professional status of our PAs, and ensures a safe and productive work environment. We share yourgoal to reach an agreement as soon as possible and appreciate your patience as we work with your union to do so.

We look forward to making further progress at our next negotiation session on November 8, and will keep you updated.
